Determining whether or not you are eligible for SSD benefits
The requirements for Social Security Disability eligibility are relatively straight forward, but can be tricky since no two situations are ever exactly the same.
In general, you may be eligible for benefits if:
You have been diagnosed with an illness or injury that has kept you out of work for at least the past 12 months.
You have been diagnosed with an illness or injury that will keep you out of work for the next 12 months.
You are suffering from a life-threatening or terminal condition.
You must have accumulated sufficient credits by working for a long enough period of time at a job where your paycheck was subject to the Social Security payroll deduction.
Be sure to remember that SSD is not a means-tested program in which the value of benefits is based on need. Your eligibility is determined not only by the above criteria. For SSI, you must be disabled, blind, or elderly (at least 65 years old) to qualify. Unlike SSD, this program is a means-tested public service program primarily based on need. The benefits you can expect to receive under this program depend on your countable income. If all this sounds confusing, Don’t Worry!!!!
